Mama Tried

When the day is done and nothing went as I had planned…at least you know I tried

Tasteless Candy

Sometimes, it feels like the world is playing a not so nice trick on you.  I could feel this one coming about a week ago, but I will admit, a week ago I thought it was going to be a super-duper, not funny at all trick.  Lets just say it involved daily bouts with nausea and lots of light-headedness.  symptoms that when experienced at the same time and in this same fashion usually resulted in a new person living in our house about 32 weeks later.  And I will just go ahead and say what I think we are all thinking here, this has does NOT need another person living in it.  If you have spent much time at all with us, you would know that we are hanging on by a thread.  A good, sturdy thread like the kind that are made out of steel, but a thread just the same.  Anyway, there should be no more Baughmans unless we get that puppy Mattie has been begging for, so that just means one other thing……mama’s getting sick.

And I kept waiting for it, the full-on, I feel terrible sick to hit.  To wake up unable to breath due to the horrific congestion that accompanies any and all sicknesses I have.  But it never happened.

Yesterday, Nana had to go back to California.  She left the same time Mattie did for school and I decided that we needed to get out and do something so that Reese didn’t sit around and miss her all day.  We still had the rental bus with the dual screen dvd player, so I decided that this would be a perfect time to take the longer drive to Mississippi to hit up the Gap outlet.  This drive usually gets on his nerves after a while, but armed with video entertainment, it ought to be no problem.  Something seemed eerily out of sorts when we pulled into the tiny outlet elbow (truly it can’t be called a mall as it’s really only sort of a strip mall with a sprinkling of stores) and I couldn’t find the Gap.  It’s usually at the end, but there was absolutely nothing there anymore….just gone, like nothing had ever been there.  And it was shortly after that discovery that my nose started to grow more and more congested.

By the time we arrived at Mattie’s school, I was in full-blown mouth breather mode.  Before I go any further here, I would like to tell you that the outlets that I usually frequent are in Tunica, Mississippi – which is also home to quite the little Vegas of the Midsouth.  So for a better part of the drive, you are bombarded with billboard signs advertising what specials are at what hotels and what incredible acts will be performing.  Who knew Huey Lewis and the News were still together? But the thing that really got my attention was that one casino would be giving away 2, count them 2, leather jackets every 15 minutes.  I have lots of questions about that.  Why leather jackets?  Why every 15 minutes? Can you pick your size should you win or did they just buy these jackets in bulk.  And do a lot of people say to themselves, “We’ll, this Friday night I think I’m gonna go on down to Tunica and win me one of those  jackets.”

So back to my original thoughts…….upon arrival at home with all three kids, I had come to the conclusion that I simply didn’t feel good. I knew that I was getting sick and wouldn’t you know it, as soon as my backup, my reinforcements had boarded and plane and left, it attacked.  And this is where I feel like the world is chuckling just a little.  Also, I have a huge pumpkin basket full of the good candy from the kids plentiful harvest Wednesday night and though I want so bad to eat it, I can’t taste it.  And believe me, I have tried.  Even without functioning taste buds, I have still had more chocolate than I probably should have, but its all been in vain.  Part of me is considering hiding some of it so I can eat it later.
